A Single-Session Adventure For Parties of 2nd-3rd level
It’s been a long time since the people of Welton have worried about anything but sheep ticks and late frosts, but now a pack of strangely determined wolves are spiriting away entire flocks at a time and driving farmers from their fields.
With food running low and their sorcerer-in-residence nowhere to be found, the village council send out a desperate plea for brave adventurers to destroy the beasts.
Is the job as easy as a walk in the woods, or is there more to the Wolves of Welton than mere animal cunning? There’s only one way to find out…

Is this meant for characters to start at level 2 and reach level 3 or would a party of 4 level 3s be good to go for this?

Either one would work, though leveling during/after the adventure would hardly make sense unless you’re incorporating it into your campaign. I’ve always skipped the owlbear and reduced the number of wolves when playing at 2nd level. For a 3rd level party, the given numbers and stats should be fine. But overall, I think the core of the adventure and its most exciting/dramatic parts are the negotiations and reveals, which work at any level.

I did thisnl with a party of 3 lvl 3s, they took some damage but werent in any real danger due to playing it smart.

We had a heart felt moment. One of the terms of peace was for the PCs to take a pup with them. When they returned they wanted to comfort the shepherd who thought he had gone crazy, but as per the agreement they couldnt tell anyone of their findings at the wolf den. So the ranger brought the pup into his room, said nothing and closed the door. When he heard it speak, he broke down with tears of happiness and played with the pup till morning. We all awwwh’d at the same time.

Had a lot of fun DMing this and so did my players. Thanks for the adventure!
In terms of timing, my party of 5 players took about 6 hours to finish this, even though we fast-forwarded through the town stuff at the end of the adventure. I did include the optional encounter in the woods. Not sure how to account for the extra time, though our group was distractible and so we had some delays along the way.
In terms of difficulty, my level 3 players (well-balanced party) almost lost the final encounter. Both their tactics and their resource management were not great, so maybe that’s the difference between success and failure. Still it’s hard to imagine level 2 players with solid tactics making it through all of these fights. I’m a new DM though so take that for what you will.

Great adventure – thank you! I just DM’d a party of three 2nd level players and made these downgrade adjustments – 1) Father Merricksonn provided two regular healing potions to the party (which were both used), 2) Each encounter/wolf-type had one less (only 7 wolves in the first encounter, then 5 wolves outside the cave, and 3 armored wolves), 3) Flame and Bolt’s breath attacks dealt only 6 damage at full strength rather than 9. The party barely survived, but all did and they negotiated the wolves retreat from the area. The group was very into role playing and good conversations, so we skipped the Owlbear encounter, and still went a full 6 hours. Had a blast!

Just DM’d this campaign last night. I had two new players and one experienced. This helped with rule explanations and assisted me as a new DM. Took about 4 1/2 hours with minor distractions, such as food. I really enjoyed this campaign.

PCs didn’t figure out the twist until the final battle due to them not asking many questions. Didn’t meet Featherock until the end of the campaign, either.

Just a note to say thank you and we love your content! We ran 2 tables of D&D at a meetup of Parents here in Brooklyn last night (we have a sub group of gamers that meets monthly). Both tables ran WoW and everyone loved the adventure!

I did this as a player once and near the end I wanted to kill the village so bad for attacking the poor wolves.

I was wondering, would this adventure be possible (with some minor adjustments) for a group of 4-5 first lvl characters? Some have played before and some are new to the game.

Absolutely. If they decide to fight Flame & Bolt, you may have to downgrade these in terms of HP and the damage of their breath attacks. But if they behave like most beginner groups I’ve played this with and are eager to negotiate, they should be fine.

In preparation I found that some of the references to other books are inaccurate.The wolf statblock is on MM p341, not p241 and the commoner can be found at MM p345, not PHB.

I tried this adventure first time DMing, with two of my friends aswell. Knowing this is really made for 3 – 4 people i bumped their level up to level 4. They and I had a blast it was really good.
The end fight however did prove almost fatal for them, They won with just 4 HP left on one of the players, while the other was unconscious.
Anyway really good adventure for first timers, can recommend, ideal for new GMs and new groups, however i suspect its better with 3 – 4 people for balancing.

I’m a new GM and I’m using this in my campaign, I have 6 players, one of them being experienced. Because there’s so many of them would it be easier to run this through them at 2nd Level or 3rd level?
I want to make sure this is balanced but also let the new players know they can’t go into every combat guns blazing. Thank you.

Found this premade adventure and it gave me the guts to DM for the first time. Used Welton as my starter town for a party of 2 lvl 3s. A College of Sword Bard and a Grave Domain Cleric.
The initial hook was them starting outside the town after taking a contract from a job board. They came upon the two shepherds outside town being attacked by wolves and one of the two ended up villagers were killed. This set the tone for the rest of the module.
One thing lead to another, and they eventually killed the bulk of the wolves in their cave by starting a fire at its mouth, fanning it, and suffocating most save for Bolt and Flame plus a few unnamed wolves. It was a massacre, but they approached it creatively so I allowed it.
They never figured out what happened to Alexi. The defacto mayor character asked that in their travels they keep an eye out for a replacement magic worker.
Also going to have to return to pick up the tanned pelt of Bolt, some magical properties to be determined.
It was a wonderful time, well thought out adventure. Thanks for writing it and making it free to use.
